The (Japanese) government (recently) announced a programme to boost job creation and encourage competition amongst domestic companies. The measures aim to counter the effects of corporate restructuring by, inter alia, subsidising public and private sector job placements and improving training opportunities. Further rises in unemployment could depress consumer spending and jeopardise the first-quarter gains in economic growth.
