United States Commerce Secretary William Daley said that the United States and China could reach a WTO entry deal in two weeks, if Beijing renewed the offer made at April's bilateral summit meeting in Washington. The April offer contained far-reaching concessions, but the White House felt unable to accept the deal for domestic political reasons. However, US officials are now concerned to prevent Beijing withdrawing its earlier concessions, which might make it almost impossible to secure legislative approval for permanent MFN.
