The battle is over, the war goes on in Iraq, and among observers worldwide. Just yesterday a US military commander noted that the US is now embroiled in a classic guerilla war, and that troops would have to stay indefinately, and in significant numbers. Breaking topics just now are the reliability of the intelligence which was used to garner public opinion in favour of the US/British invasion, and the debate continues on how stablizing or de-stablising the Iraq war was for global economics, security in the region, the war against terrorism, and international relations as a whole

March 2003

The Iraqi conflict has important implications for the stability of the Middle East and power structures in the Arab region. The invasion of Iraq is welcomed by some for the chance to depose the current leadership and "liberate" the people of Iraq. Citizens and governments of Arab countries are divided - treading a fine line between the neutralization of an aggressive and unstable foe, and concern about the increased role of the West and the USA in the region.

However overall, the Arab world is not welcoming the Americans and British as liberators. They know the truth. That the Iraq war will do little to stabilize the region, and more than likely destablise it more. To them, the real problem is just south west of Baghdad, in the Israel/Palestine long time conflict.

In Asia, Muslim majority nations such as Malaysia and Indonesia are concerned for the effects on the Islam world, with Malaysian PM Mahathir already characterising the war as a "War against Muslims". Thailand is sitting on the fence while the Northern asian region is divided with China opposing the war, and Japan and South Korea part of the US's "coalition of the willing". The Philippines, another nation with a major Muslim population has also come down on the side of their previous colonizer - the US.
