Does Singapore need to get down?

Singapore's own are starting to question the culture of rules and regulations that in some ways have 'made' Singapore, but in other ways have reduced spontaneity and risk taking.

Singapore's Business Times today features and article on how We need to learn to rock in business, from Loh Hui Yin, who had the unfortunate experience of experiencing a Canto-rock performance that was less than inspiring due to the crowd control elements reducing audience participation.

It does not take Hui Yin long to draw parallels to business...

Before I went to Hong Kong to work many years ago, a Singaporean stockbroker, who has spent about a third of his 50-odd years there, told me: 'In Hong Kong, we do the deals first and then ask if we have violated any rules and regulations. In Singapore, you think so hard about everything that the deal would have come and gone by the time you have figured it all out.'

It wouldn't have been too long ago, that this questioning of the Singapore way would not have found its way into the Singapore press.

But the times are changing in Singapore, as the nation state has no option than to further unbridle some of the management talent in Singapore to compete more effectively internationally.
