The Top 10 Brands according to the Gospel of Google

Search Engine Google is now estimated to account for between 60% and 65% of all US search query results performed on the World Wide Web, with their databases resident not only at their own site at but also the BBC, Earthlink, and Yahoo, among several others. Once their results are integrated into AOL Search in a few months, that market share will increase further.

Google is known for the relevancy of their search query returns, while the great majority of competing search engines rely on query returns being based on advertising, paid listings, and 'pay per click. Part of this is due to their 'Page Rank' technology, which ranks pages that are 'cited' by other pages on the WWW, higher in the returns you see when you enter a query.

It is no surprise therefore that Google, as one of the purer non-commercial indexes of Web content is being used for serious research. Tomorrow we will be looking at some of these uses through the 'Google Labs' features, but today we will just pass on one of the latest editions to the Google Zeitgeist - a summary of popular culture and preferences based on summated queries to the Google Search Engine.

According to the number of queries submitted, Google has determined that the ten most popular brands for April 2002 are -

  1. Ferrari
  2. Sony
  3. BMW
  4. Nokia
  5. Disney
  6. Ryanair
  7. HP
  8. Ikea
  9. Adobe
  10. Nike

Asia is represented by Japan's Sony at number 2, (but now a truly international brand).

Interesting way to measure brand-related query popularity if not brand exposure, recall or recognition.. Note also the other categories in the Zeitgeist this month like top gaining and declining queries, top political figures, and top queries from selected countries, covering a smorgasboard of tittilating tattle.

Keep tuned for more news on how to use Google to identify groups or sets of terms, and other cunning research stunts.
