Getting work done between surfing

Surfing the internet this Sunday morning, I cam accross an article on the Web of distraction that stated in part that "...Today, work is something that gets done in slivered increments, between bouts of web surfing and all that other stuff we're able to do on our desktops..."

No kidding...

At least a decade after all those promises of computers creating efficiencies, we spend most of our time that staff are actually doing real work rather than IM'ing with friends and visiting their favourite web sites. We spend more of our time deleting spam e-mail and updating virus programs, if our hard disk hasnt been mangled before we got around to it. The other half the time is spent clicking away pop up ads on the Web.

Then we get to do some work...

Today I'm browsing away on the Web when I should really be writing proposals, organizing schedules, paying bills, and smelling the flowers.

Somewhere the promise of the new world got hijacked... and this week in this column, I'm going to try to work out why, and how to wrest back that promise, if only personaly...

Then I might even get around to applying it at work...

When Grandma Rat used to sit me on her knee to listen to the old wireless, it was a 20 minute break between keeping the old Rat burrow spick and span, and Rat choruses around the old goanna. Now the wireless revolution is starting to sour...
