Abercrombie and Fitch Asian cartoons accused of racial stereo-typing
Political correctness gone mad? - or a company badly out of touch? A US clothier with an affluent up-market clientele released a new line of T-shirts featuring Asian stereotypes of many decades back, and promptly withdrew the line after complaints from the San Francisco Asian-American community. Regardless of your personal take, its bad PR for Abercrombie and Fitch. The SG Gate News has summarised reports on the current furore in Abercrombie and Fitch spokesmen expressed "surprise" at the negative reaction, suggesting that somebody just didn't do their homework... that is wrong and stop going against the asian just because we the best..
Posted by: June on February 25, 2003 10:20 AMAbercrombie is wrong to make such line of T-shirts featuring Asian stereotypes. What are them to judge? Going against Asians just shows cowardness and true, Asians are the best at a lot of things including lots of clothings companies better than "Abercrombie and Fitch." Thank you.
Posted by: blialeeyanga on April 7, 2003 03:40 AMi think that is gay. it's just they're product and they arnt meaning it in a bad way so just get over it!!
Posted by: mike hunt on May 30, 2003 01:31 AMim asian, half at least, and anyone who is taking offense to these shirts, is just taking advantage of the fact that they are asian, and can get away with saying that it is bad, so just get the hell over it is right. Is the shirt actually linked directly towards you? no it isnt, it doesnt have a line at the bottom of the shirt that says, "your name" and this shirt is going to be directed to make fun of you personaly, no so get the hell over it, shit, if they still had these on the shelfs, i would wear it and be happy i paid for it, i dont personally care too much for abercrombie in gen, but any comp that makes shirts poking fun or just making jokes about asians, is a funny ass t-shirt to me, b.c they arent being serious, its just a seller, the only way i can see you having some anger or anything out of this, is if you see someone of a diff race,(black, white, etc.) wearing the shirt, then MAYBE you have a right to be upset. losers....
Posted by: lewis on June 27, 2003 06:55 AMMike Hunt and Lewis. Go look in the mirror and see how ugly you are making yourself look. Lewis, you're not asian at all. Stop talking and trying to suck up one way and diss asian another way.
SHAME on Abercrombie and Fitch!
Posted by: Albert Bucknor on July 21, 2003 11:42 AMFirst of all I am asian. Vietnamese to be exact.. and so whenever people stereotype me i take that seriously.. I dont believe that any race should be pointed out like that.. and plus.. what the hell do the shirts even mean? Do A&F think that this is funny? when they certainly have no knowledge of what they have on their shirts? it's definitely stereotypical of them to do this.. and people who say that it doesn't matter just obviously don't understand.. it is the 20th century already.. shouldn't we all be able to not have so much racism in our country? I mean.. those shirts are offensive because they don't hold any real meaning of what asians are like.. they are just a fake advertisement made by A&F to entertain themselves at the sake of all asians.
Posted by: Ngoc on August 20, 2003 11:11 AMOh and another thing! what if asians started making shirts with white people on it saying that they're all rednecks and **** like that.. or other derogatory things.. it would be just like this but it would be taken more seriously because the United States is overwhelmingly populated with mainly european descent.. SO THERE!
Posted by: Ngoc on August 20, 2003 11:13 AMi just landed on this site because i did a search on yahoo on this issue relating to a&f and asians. i use to shop at a&f a lot, i myself am 100% asian (thai to be exact). i remember seeing those tshirts and i actually looked at them, but they didnt appeal to me much since i was bothered by how they were depicting asians. i didnt find it to be funny one bit. even though they were clearly depicting chinese people in general, it didnt matter because their clearly making fun of asian people in general.
i read on the san diego news site, one of the spokesperson for a&f even admitted the point of the t-shirts were to be funny and they thought asians would like it.
obviously the people at a&f didnt take into consideration how asians would feel about it. they know damn well that majority of their employees & customers are predominately WHITE so white people would be wearing these t-shirts not asians. that is why i was disgusted by those t-shirts and didnt even bother buying one.
the person above me wrote, "what if asians started making shirts with white people on it saying that they're all rednecks and **** like that.. or other derogatory things.. it would be just like this but it would be taken more seriously because the United States is overwhelmingly populated with mainly european descent" this person is absolutely right! there would just be an uproar as well if it was depicted towards african americans, like if the word nigger was used on a t-shirt all hell would break loose just like what happened with the rodney king event. but when it comes to asians, its just OK to make fun of right? fuck that! a&f fucking sucks big time...
i'm glad their being sued because their just a racist company and discriminate agaisnt non-white people especially minorities for employment. i remember i applied a few times and i have the experience, but yet they never called me. now i stopped shopping at a&f knowing all this. for those who say "to get over it" you guys are just dumb and dont realize how racist of a society we live in today even though its 2003.
you also obviously dont have any pride of who you really are, if your not even asian you shouldnt even talk because this doesnt affect you or your race as it does to asians. and if you are asian and arent bothered by how a&f depicts you, then your blind and have no respect for asians or your culture, because even though i was born here in america, i still have pride of what i am, and that is i'm asian first then i'm an american.
Posted by: alisa on October 27, 2003 12:12 PMLooking for anyone who actually bought one of these t-shirts. Need them for a PBS doc called Race Is The Place
Posted by: Rick Tejada-Flores on November 12, 2003 01:34 AMHahahahaha, I think it would be cool if the asian shirts came out. I would buy all of them and sport them. It's like how the Messicants sued Taco Bell for the chihuahua being a stereotype, it's all gay. Can't we have some sense of humor and just chill with the whole racist ish? It's shirts, if you don't like them, don't buy them or wear them, that simple. Plus if A&F are making stereotype shirts, then why don't the Asians make something like that back? Us Asians have to be strong and ignore stupid little stereotype and racist stuff such as t-shirts destroy what we got going on. But yeah A&F does disriminate against minorities... But we need to not take things to the heart sometimes...
Posted by: RandomAsianChick on February 25, 2004 12:31 PMi still <3 abercrombie!! but yeah that is wrong...i dont think they meant that th0!! x0ox
Posted by: eRicA on March 31, 2004 09:54 PMi think its wrong to be racist to asian/asian american, i myself is 100% asian i just think a&f being racist to us(asians) should just stop making fun of who we are. itz not like we go make fun of american(white) people. i would of never thought of discriminating other racist.
