Two Villains and Three Heroes
"...Sir, if someone is nice to me, I can be nice to him in return but if he is mean I can do worse than what he does to me..." Tommy Suharto (Soeharto) - Indonesian Pres. Soeharto's favoured son and previous owner of Lamborghini and now defunct Indonesian airline companies, allegedly to Justice Kartasasmita, the judge who sentenced him for a corrupt land deal and triggered Tommy's one year on the run. Several months later Kartasamita was gunned down by an unknown assailant while travelling in his car. Tommy was famous for turning up in black tie and luxury cars to functions in Jakarta while the collapse of the Indonesian money system was causing riots in the streets and starvation. His PR judgement skills were however relatively exemplary compared to his sister Tutut who when told that the residents of a poor Jakarta neighbourhood could not afford chicken, in true French aristocracy style, replied "...Let them eat rabbit..." "...These people (who killed Daniel Pearl) have become the shame of the world. As far as I'm concerned they haven't achieved their aim at all, which was to perpetrate fear, to paralyze me ... Even those terrorists haven't succeeded in making me hate Pakistan or making me hate Muslims. If you ask me what is Pakistan for me, it's first and foremost it's people..." Marianne Pearl, bereaved wife of Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl, who was killed by political extremists while researching a WSJ story to tell their own story, on CNN's "Larry King Live", 20th March Chao Phraya River Rat in Asia Culture on March 24, 2002 07:29 PM |
