Fear and Loathing in Cambodia
Thailand's own "Tommy Suharto" and youngest son of New Aspiration Party's (NAP) senior pollie Police Captain Chalerm Yubamrang is in the news yet again, as his family fled an explosion at a Cambodian casino just 100 meters from the Thai border. Duangchalerm is on the run after being named as a suspect in the murder of a police officer in a central Bangkok pub. Many are suggesting Chalerm was visiting his fugitive son, though Chalerm denies any knowledge of his son's whereabouts. Duangchalerm is the latest in line of delinquent offspring of establishment Thailand politicians. Pop's New Aspiration party, headed by a military figure Chavalit and more commonly know at the APMF as the "New Exasperation Party", is a shining example of old Thai politics, it's power base being the poor Issan and East Thailand provinces, where patronage is bought by 20 Baht notes attached to voting slips. Original link from the Bangkok Post Sunday 13 January 2002 - Yubamrungs flee as blasts rock hotel Two bomb blasts at a Cambodian casino yesterday morning sent the controversial Yubamrung family fleeing back across the border into Thailand. The presence of influential politician Chalerm Yubamrung and his family at the casino fuelled speculation they were making a clandestine visit to his son, Duangchalerm, a fugitive murder suspect. Twelve Cambodians, two of them casino guards, were injured when two explosions rocked the Princess hotel and casino in the Cambodian border town of Poipet early yesterday. The casino is just 100m from the Thai border. Thai customs officials said about 100 Thai gamblers fled back across the border after the first bomb went off around 8.45am. The second bomb exploded 10 minutes later. Chao Phraya River Rat in Politics and Government on January 13, 2002 03:04 PM |
