In some cases, copyright is shared with original authors and columnists or other publishers. With regard to reproduction of material OPC Publishing follows traditionally accepted guidelines of book and journal publishing copyright as established by the Berne Convention, with some modification for the nature of Web and electronic publishing. Apart from protecting the intellectual property rights of contributors and authors and the value of OPC Web properties, OPC sees little value in reproducing content multiple times on the Web, as unlike books and physical media, content at a certain URL can be viewed by more than one person at a time and is fully accessible through Web indexes, directories, and Search facilities. The very soul and nature of the Web, embodied in hyperlinking, allows for quick access to related material anywhere else on the Web. All OPC Web sites reinforce this tradition by linking aggressively to external pages where original, more detailed or authoritative information is available. We encourage external sites to link to our own pages when the reverse occurs. We also keep our pages simple and fast loading with a minimum of clutter and only highly relevant links. This is what makes the Web, as originally envisaged, a powerful mechanism for exchange of views, information and knowledge, linking together original sources which gain reputation by easy access, open debate, and citation frequency. Copying material eventually results in obfuscation of the identity of those responsible for the original content, and clogging of Search indices with pages of duplicate content. This is why we encourage related sites to link to appropriate pages rather than copy content. We do recognize the right of others to reproduce some material for the purposes of review or quotation within a broader article. We also recognize that material can be provided to a larger audience by translation, or by reproduction in the potentially small amount of cases where access to original sites is not possible. Given the above principles, the following guidelines apply: Other Web sites or electronically published avenues such as CDs or E-books may copy up to 20% of the visible textual content (ie: not counting codes or text not visible to all of the leading browsers) of any page, and limited to a maximum of 50 pages, subject to the following:
