Motorcycle taxi Bangkok Thailand Traffic Jam Rot Thip?... Take this taxi..... (Bangkok, Thailand 7/1/99)
Nobody ever owns up to it of course, but how else do you think your Armani be-suited client got to the meeting on time? These guys hang out on street corners of major thoroughfares in Bangkok and will take you most places for the price of an air-con REAL taxi. Then again, you will get where you want to much much faster. Bit dangerous.. well yes.. ..but who can beat that thrill as you watch the wing mirrors of hundreds of cars being retracted ahead of you as you speed down Sukhumvit spurring on your trusty steed with your laptop....
Jazz in Bangkok Siam Jazz (Bangkok, Thailand 11/12/98)
New York, Paris, New Orleans, Shanghai.. all great jazz towns at one time or the other. ..But the jazz capital of Asia still remains Bangkok, not just for the big acts, but for all those little unexpected surprises that spring up when you least expect it. What better way to relax after a day pounding those dusty streets? Here the resident band at Bourbon Street Restaurant whip up a Thai typhoon in the corner. In a town where the King is a hip sax player, there's a lotta soul... ..Get yer mojo workin.... ..and check out our guide to Bangkok nightlife and dining here too for where to catch the best jazz
Bird Cages, Bandung Indonesia Wooden bird cages. (Bandung, Indonesia 12/9/98)
Well, we think there are birds inside there somewhere. These birds are never hungry though as they look over a small eating place deep in the middle of a kampung up Bandung way. It took 5 minutes of walking though those narrow winding alleyways to find this eating place. ..Beats the Hilton anyday.. Reservations not essential.
Jakarta Indonesia Shanty Life... (Jakarta, Indonesia 2/10/98)
Well, that tree is almost finished. How can we boil up the noodles now? Well.. at least we still got the Harley...
Shangri-La hotel , Bangkok Thailand Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok (Bangkok, Thailand 11/12/98)
From the Shanty to the Shang... from poverty to luxury.. Asian crisis or no, there will always be the haves and the have nots.. Its a daily reality in this part of the world.. which many just ignore.... Sitting on the Chao Phraya river next to the grand old Oriental, the Shang just HAS to keep up with its neighbours. The flower show is pretty.. ..and we would tell you what the rooms are like as soon as someone pays for a room for Blanchard or the Rat..
Indoensian traditional music I guess they're not playing "Rock around the clock"... (Jakarta, Indonesia 20/9/98)
..And a bloody good thing too.. 'cause if I hear another Fiilipino cover band playing bad versions of even worse foreign songs, I'll go home.. These guys are playing traditional central Javanese instruments at the Hotel Kartika in Jakarta. Better than a 17 year old in pink hotpants reading the lyrics as she goes any time, though I'm sure these guys wouldn't know any of Blanchard's requests... ..Then again youll'd have to around 60 to remember any of them anyway..
Cirebon Indonesia A well trodden path... (Outside Cirebon, Indonesia 4/6/98)
Peaceful rustic scene near Cirebon in Northern Indonesia. Some things never change and though how much we deny it, we always follow the footsteps of others... Agriculture is still Indonesia's pulse, though all you hear about are banks and oil. An economy held together with the sweat of one's hands and peopled by the salt of the earth. Spend a day on one of these farms and you will know what the meaning of work really is... We all gotta eat.. and this is the origins of that stuff in our rice bowl..
Cirebon Indoensia rural scene More well trodden paths (Outside Cirebon, Indonesia 4/6/98)
Honest toil again...
Soeharto billboard Would you buy a product from this man? (Medan, Indonesia 2/7/98)
Roughly translated from the bahasa, this billboard exhorts all to buy Indonesian products. The product pictured however has problematic brand image problems himself. We doubt the billboard still stands...
Lombok Indonesia Would you buy dinner from these gals? (Lombok, Indonesia 15/7/98)
Of course you would! Traditional Indonesian food served by some of the friendliest people in the world. Lombok is a small island reached by a 30 minute bumpy prop airplane trip from Bali. Still largely unaffected by tourism, this mystical island is a welcome relief from the bustle of Jakarta and Kuta. It pays to know just a little bit of the Indonesian language in Lombok, just so you can order traditional Lombok cusine..
Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Who needs a Christmas Cake?.. (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 6/12/97)
Yes indeed... especially when you have the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur to add some sparkle to the city. Santa wont have much problems finding this chimney on Christmas night. Just look for the tallest building in the world. ..Not that Petronas needs any Christmas presents. About 12 months ago the PM here had to assure us that the towers were NOT leaning. It only LOOKS that way as you stagger out of Bentleys at the Hotel Nikko
Kuala Lumpur night skyline Thundery night closes in on Kuala Lumpur (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 6/12/97)
The new KL Tower shines through a darkening sundown in this photograph taken from Bukit Bintang. "the dark blessed night".. as Louis Armstrong would growl...
Monkey Monkey at Batu Caves (Kuala Lumpur 21/11/97)
Batu Caves is about 30 mins from KL centre with no traffic jams and 60 to 90 minutes with traffic jams! A Hindu temple carved into a large cave... with many of these pesky characters hanging around...
