Research to help us understand our environment is an integral part of our life at The City University of Hong Kong. Like a cat's whiskers, it provides us with a way of sensing our environment and making corrections to our management proctices before the market surprises us. And with all of the changes and shifts associated with the coming switch in sovereignty July 1, 1997 when Britain's flag is lowered and the flag of the People's Republic of China is raised over Hong Kong, applied research becomes especially important to the managers who live and/or work in the Asian environment.
CityU is helping to develop informed strategies for businesses interested in the long-term opportunities that appear to exist in Hong Kong, China, and the Asia-Pacific Region. But, we are doing so with an eye towards offering clear guidance on managing risks that always seem to be associated with great opportunities in the business world. Four of our research centers focus on this region. They specifically cover Asia-Pacific financial markets, Asia-Pacific quality and productivity management, Chinese accounting, and Chinese management theories and practices. Some 200 Faculty of Business staff members from some twenty countries contribute to the global perspective we take at CityU. Our links with colleagues at major Chinese universities are highly productive. We have carefully moved beyond short-term academic exchanges into systematic joint research projects and executive training, an approach we are also taking with Japanese and North American universities. We have also been working to develop highly productive relationships with key businesses in the region. For example, graduates of the Master's program run by the People's Bank of China are taking courses that we helped develop. This important contribution to professional practice is being funded by the World Bank. All of this is not to suggest that theoretical research is not important. In fact, it underlies and guides applied research. But at this moment in history in Hong Kong, it is with applied research that The City University of Hong Kong can make the greatest contribution to our students, to our community, and to the managers and businesses who look toward our academic staff - many of whom have considerable managerial experience themselves - for advice and guidance. I think that you will enjoy the following sample of our work. The papers address management issues, marketing issues, human resource issues, ethics, and strategy. If you have questions or comments, feel free to contact the authors or myself. We'll look forward to hearing from you.
