Andre' M. Everett

Dr. Andre' M. Everett is a Senior Lecturer in the Advanced Business Programme at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. He received his MBA and PhD in management from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA, with prior studies at schools in Germany, France, Iceland, and Pennsylvania. Principally involved in graduate teaching and supervision, he instructs commerce and medical students in operations strategy, international business and survey research methodology. His research interests include internationalization of management methodologies (specifically, JIT and TQM), cross-functional integration of management philosophies, and cultural influences on international business. Active in international conference organization, reviewing and presentations for the Decision Sciences Institute, the Pan-Pacific Business Association, and other international societies, he is also a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), New Zealand Computer Society (NZCS), New Zealand Institute of International Affairs (NZIIA), New Zealand Organization for Quality (NZOQ) and Telecommunications Users Association of New Zealand (TUANZ).

Gary Fontaine

Dr. Fontaine completed his education in social psychology at the University of Washington, Duke University, and the University of Western Australia, receiving his Ph.D. from the latter in 1972. He currently is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Hawaii and on the faculties of the Intercultural Management Program of the Japan America Institute of Management Science (JAIMS) in Honolulu and the Organizational Design and Effectiveness Program of the Fielding Institute in Santa Barbara, California. He is principal consultant of his own Strange Lands International Assignment Specialists with over 25 years experience providing training for personnel from over 100 organizations in the Americas/Asia/Pacific region. Dr. Fontaine's primary professional interests center on helping assignees and organizations deal with the new people, places, and technologies encountered on international assignments in contexts such as international business, diplomacy, foreign study, knowledge creation and transfer, immigration, justice, tourism, service delivery, and intercultural marriage.

Usha C. V. Haley

Dr. Usha C. V. Haley is Associate Professor in the School of Management, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), on the Graduate Faculty of Management, Rutgers University, Newark, New Jersey, USA and Research Associate in the Managing Business in Asia Program at The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia. She is a Visiting Professor, teaching Business in the Pacific Rim at Harvard University (Economics Department) this summer. She received her Ph.D. in Business Administration, specializing in International Business and Management, from the Stern School of Business, New York University. She also completed Masters degrees in Political Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and in Journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has just published , "The New Asian Emperors: The Overseas Chinese, their Strategies and Competitive Advantages" (with George T. Haley and Chin-Tiong Tan, Butterworth-Heinemann, 1998, ISBN:0750641304) and "Strategic Management in the Asia Pacific: Harnessing Regional and Organizational Change for Competitive Advantage" (Butterworth-Heinemann, 1999, ISBN 0750641290). She also has 2 forthcoming books besides: "Multinational Firms as Participants in Political Environments"; and, "The Chameleon in the Cactus Patch: Managing Multinational Firms in Mexico". Her current research interests in Competitive International Strategy include business-government relations and doing business successfully in the Asia Pacific and Mexico. Prior to entering academics, she worked at the United Nations Organization and as a journalist. Besides NJIT and Rutgers, she has taught Strategic Management and International Business at Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass.); The Australian National University (Canberra, Australia); the Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane, Australia); the National University of Singapore (Singapore); Purdue University; the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Monterrey, Mexico); New York University (New York); and American University (Washington, D.C.). Additionally, she has taught in major corporate, governmental and universities' executive-development programs, for top and middle managers and policy makers, in the United States, Australia, Mexico, Vietnam, Thailand, Italy, India and Singapore. She also serves as a consultant on issues concerning strategic management and foreign direct investment for several multinational corporations in North America, Australia, Europe and Asia. Currently, she is the Regional Editor, Asia Pacific, for Management Decision (UK) for which she has just guest edited the special double issue on Strategic Management in the Asia Pacific. She is also the Regional Editor, Asia Pacific, for the Journal of Organizational Change Management (USA) for which she has guest edited a special double issue on Strategic Dimensions of Organizational Change and Restructuring in the Asia Pacific. She also serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Leadership and Leaders (USA).

George T. Haley

Dr. George T. Haley is currently Associate Professor and Director of the Marketing and International Business Programs at the University of New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut, USA. This summer he is a Visiting Professor at Harvard University (Economics Department) where he is teaching Business in the Pacific Rim. Dr. Haley received his Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests include new product development, cross-cultural marketing, strategic marketing management, industrial marketing management, ecological marketing, overseas business networks and channel management. He has particular research interests dealing with marketing and strategic decision-making in the Asia Pacific and Mexico. Besides currently researching strategic and industrial marketing in South and Southeast Asian economies, Dr. Haley is also examining the effects of using financial models in new product decision-making. He has presented his research at major professional conferences and to audiences of managers and academics. He has just published the book, "The New Asian Emperors: The Overseas Chinese, their Strategies and Competitive Advantages" (with Chin-Tiong Tan and Usha C. V. Haley, Butterworth-Heinemann, 1998, ISBN:0750641304) and has another "A Directory of Research on Southeast Asia" (Marketing Institute of Singapore). He also has two books on "Technopiracy and Foreign Direct Investment" and " Strategic Marketing in the Asia Pacific" under consideration. Additionally, his research has been published in Industrial Marketing Management, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Materials Management, the Journal of Advertising, Management Decision, Journal of Organizational Change Management, and Advances in Consumer Research, among others. He has taught Marketing and International Business at Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass.), DePaul University, (Chicago), Baruch College (NewYork); Fordham University (New York); the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Monterrey, Mexico); The National University of Singapore (Singapore); Purdue University (Singapore); Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane, Australia); and, Thammasat University (Bangkok, Thailand). He has also taught in executive-development programs for major universities in the USA, Australia, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and India; and, consulted on strategic and industrial marketing with companies in the Americas, Australia and Asia. He currently serves as Regional Editor, Asia, for the Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing (USA), and has guest edited a special issue on Business-to-Business Marketing in Asia for the journal; he also serves on the Editorial Advisory and Review Board of the International Marketing Review (UK), Industrial Marketing Management (USA), and Marketing Intelligence and Planning (UK). He is also guest editing a special issue for Marketing Intelligence and Planning on Strategic Marketing in the Emerging Economies.

Neil C. Herndon, Jr.

Neil Herndon is a Lecturer in Marketing at the Department of Business and Management of The City University of Hong Kong. He holds the PhD in Marketing from Texas A&M University. His academic research has appeared in the Journal of Business Ethics, the Journal of International Consumer Marketing, and the International Journal of Commerce and Management. He has also published papers for managers in the Asian Retailer and Marketing News.

Mike Hobday

Dr. Mike Hobday, author of "Innovation in East Asia: The challenge to Japan" (Edward Elgar, 1995), is a Senior Fellow specializing in corporate strategies for high technology in the Pacific Asia region at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), the University of Sussex. Prior to his training as an industrial economist, he worked for the US semiconductor corporation, Texas Instruments for ten years. His Ph.D. thesis on science and technology (later a book) analyzed how Brazil had responded to changes in the world telecommunications industry. Since joining SPRU in 1984, he has published extensively on the global semiconductor and telecommunications industries, as well as public policies for information technology. He has acted as a consultant to the Malaysian, Brazilian and Venezuelan Governments, the House of Commons, the European Union, DTI, OECD, UNIDO, NIDO, and UNCTAD and several private corporations. His recent work funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) has shown how latecomer firms from South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong (the four dragons) caught up technologically to become formidable international competitors in electronics. He is now working within the ESRC's Pacific Asia Programme on innovation in Malaysia's electronic industry.

Llewellyn D. Howell

Professor Llewellyn D. Howell is currently Professor of International Studies at Thunderbird, the American Graduate School of International Management, Glendale, Arizona, USA. At Thunderbird, he is Associate Vice President for Overseas Programs and also teaches in the areas of Political Risk Analysis and Southeast Asian Regional Business Environment. Dr. Howell has previously taught at the University of Hawaii, the American University (Washington, D.C.), the Naval Postgraduate School, and the Monterey Institute of International Studies. He began his work in the field of international affairs as a US Peace Corps Volunteer in Malaysia. He has subsequently conducted research in each of the ASEAN countries, was a Fulbright lecturer at the Malaysian National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN), worked in Program Analysis and Evaluation in the Office of the US Secretary of Defense, and was a Senior Research Associate at Third Point Systems in California, a defense research firm. He is co-editor of Malaysian Foreign Policy: Issues and Perspectives and, International Education: The Unfinished Agenda. He has also authored more than 60 scholarly articles and chapters in the areas of political risk, foreign policy and Southeast Asian studies. He is Senior Advisor for Political Risk Services and consults widely on political risk for investors, foreign policy issues and investment in Southeast Asia. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Syracuse University in 1973, with related studies at the University of Michigan and Cornell University.
